Championship History
The Ukrainian championship began in Kyiv in 1924, when Yakiv Vilner won the first title. Vilner took three of the first five championships, establishing the earliest record in a series that continued through the Ukrainian SSR era and after independence.
Anatoly Bannik holds the record with five titles. Yukhym Heller and Anton Korobov each won four, while later champions include former FIDE world champion Ruslan Ponomariov and three-time winner Andriy Volokitin.
The 2025 championship was a nine-round Swiss in Lviv with 125 players. Vladyslav Bakhmatskyi scored 7.5/9 to win his first Ukrainian title.
