Championship History

The inaugural Hungarian Championship was held in Győr in 1906. The early schedule was irregular, but state support after World War II helped turn it into a largely annual competition.

Hungary's deep chess tradition is reflected by record holders László Szabó, Lajos Portisch, and Zoltán Almási. Other champions include Gedeon Barcza, Ferenc Berkes, Judit Polgár, and Richárd Rapport.

The 2025 championship was a ten-player round robin in Budapest. Gleb Dudin scored 6.5/9 to win his first Hungarian title, half a point ahead of Benjámin Gledura and Tamás Bánusz.
