Turkish Chess Champions

Organized chess in Turkey predates the national title series. The Turkish Chess Federation records active chess associations from the 1930s, the establishment of a federation under association law in 1954, and Turkey's admission to FIDE in 1962, the same year the national team first played in a Chess Olympiad.

The published open-championship chronology used for this page starts in 1962 with Nevzat Süer. There is a source discrepancy around the beginning of the series: the federation's institutional history says the Turkish Championship was first organized in 1966, while the maintained historical winners table assigns national titles from 1962. The early entries are therefore presented as the published title record, not as evidence that every edition used the later national-final format.

The championship became more nationally structured after the federation was attached to Turkey's General Directorate of Youth and Sports in 1991. The federation says that from 1992 the event was opened across the provinces through qualifying competitions followed by a final, marking a shift from the earlier, more limited field.

Süer won seven championships, Can Arduman six, and Turhan Yılmaz five. Later champions include Suat Atalık, Mikhail Gurevich, Alexander Ipatov, Mustafa Yılmaz, Vahap Şanal, and Mert Yılmazyerli.

The 2025 championship in Gaziantep used a knockout format. Işık Can defeated Cem Kaan Gökerkan 2-0 in the two-game classical final to win his first Turkish senior title; the result is confirmed by both the Turkish federation and FIDE reports.
