Championship History
The Italian Chess Federation was established in 1920, and the first official Italian Championship followed in Viareggio in 1921. Davide Marotti won the opening title before a pre-war period led by Stefano Rosselli del Turco, Mario Monticelli, and Vincenzo Castaldi.
The postwar championship produced long-serving national champions including Castaldi, Stefano Tatai, and Michele Godena. Fabiano Caruana also won four Italian titles before changing federation to the United States.
The 2025 championship was held in Spilimbergo. Luca Moroni won his fourth Italian title, adding it to his 2017, 2022, and 2023 championships.
