David Bronstein challenged Mikhail Botvinnik in the first World Championship match organised under FIDE’s qualifying system. Botvinnik had won the vacant title in the 1948 championship tournament.

The scheduled twenty-four games ended 12–12, with five wins for each player and fourteen draws. Botvinnik retained the title under the rule that favoured the defending champion in a drawn match. There was no rapid playoff.

All 24 played games appear below in match order. The game records preserve the archive’s player names, round numbers and dates, including unknown date components. Select either player in the embedded trainer to work through the decisions from that side. A drawn game remains a complete exercise for both players.
