Bio
Kasparov became world champion in 1985 by defeating Karpov, becoming the youngest champion at the time. Their rivalry had already begun with the marathon 1984 match, and it continued through several more title contests. Few rivalries have shown such a clear clash of styles: Karpov's control and restriction against Kasparov's energy, preparation, and initiative.
Kasparov changed the expectations of elite preparation. His opening files were deep, ambitious, and often designed to create practical problems from the very beginning of the game. He did not prepare only to equalize or reach familiar structures. He prepared to seize the initiative and force opponents into positions where his calculation and confidence could dominate.
His tactical vision was supported by strategic understanding. Kasparov attacked brilliantly, but his attacks usually came from central control, better development, or a lead in activity. He understood when a temporary sacrifice would become long-term pressure and when a pawn break would transform the entire position.
Outside the official FIDE cycle, his title path became politically complicated after the 1993 split, but his playing dominance remained clear for many years. He held the classical title until losing to Kramnik in 2000 and remained one of the world's top players until his retirement from professional chess.
Kasparov's legacy is the modern professional champion: deeply prepared, tactically alert, psychologically fierce, and unwilling to let the opponent rest. His games remain essential training material for initiative and calculation.
