The first world championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov began in Moscow in September 1984 and continued into February 1985. Karpov defended against a 21-year-old challenger who had won the Candidates matches. The first player to win six games would take the title; draws did not count toward the target.

Karpov won games 3, 6, 7 and 9, establishing a four-win lead. Seventeen consecutive draws followed before his victory in game 27 brought him within one win of the championship. Kasparov won game 32, then games 47 and 48, reducing the decisive-game score to 5–3.

After 48 games and forty draws, FIDE president Florencio Campomanes terminated the match on 15 February 1985 without declaring a winner. The last game had begun on 8 February. The accumulated points were 25–23 to Karpov, but that total did not constitute a match victory under the rules. A new match started from 0–0 in September 1985.

This collection includes all 48 played games. The supplied Chessgames.com files cover rounds 1–25; rounds 26–48 come from the independent PGN Mentor archive. The archive’s generic dates for those later rounds have been replaced with game dates corroborated by two historical collections, with the original date header retained for provenance. Every game is playable from either side, including the long sequences of draws that defined the contest.
