What is the Caro–Kann Defence Exchange Variation?
After 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5, the pawn structure is balanced but the position is not automatic. White often places the bishop on d3 and seeks easy kingside development.
Black can use ...Nc6, ...Nf6 and active bishop development to pressure d4, while a minority plan with ...b5-b4 or a central ...e5 break creates fresh targets.

Create a queenside target
A prepared ...b5-b4 can loosen White's c3 support.
Watch for ...e5
The central break is powerful when Black can meet dxe5 actively.

Assuming the position plays itself
Symmetry rewards the side that develops with clearer targets.
Blocking the c8-bishop
Choose ...e6 only when the bishop has a useful route or the centre demands it.
Starting queenside play unprepared
Support ...b5 so White cannot exploit the weakened c-file.
