Two Queens vs King
Learn the safest beginner checkmate when you have overwhelming queen power.
Why This Endgame Matters
It is common in beginner games that one side ends up taking all of the opponent pieces and pawns, leaving one side a lone king. Beginners can then promote one or more of their pawns by moving them to the last rank. However in practice, beginners often fail to find a the mate, especially when low on time. Stalemate is also a common outcome as Queens cover many squares and can leave the king without legal moves. This lesson teaches how to coordinate two Queens and make the opponent king by using the ladder method and avoiding stalemate.
Key Concepts
- Use one queen to cut off ranks or files.
- Keep the queens close so they protect each other from accidental capture.
- Leave the defending king at least one legal square until the final checkmate.

1. Qgg4 { Build a wide box: Start by using one queen to take away a rank or file. The queen will prefent the opponent king from moving across that file or rank. } 1... Ke5 { The enemy King knows that moving to the edge of the board will mean checkmate so he tries to star close to the center. } 2. Qhh5+ { Ladder the Queens: Move the queens in turns so one Queen prevents the King from moving to the other side of the board and the other Queen taking away the file or rank the King is currently on. This forces the King to the edge of the board. } 2... Kf6 { The black King has to move towards the edge of the board. } 3. Qgg6+ { Give another check and take away one more rank from the black King. This Forces the King to towards the edge of the board. } 3... Ke7 { The black King is forced to move back. } 4. Qhh7+ { One more check and the King has to move to the very edge of the board. The end is close. } 4... Kf8 { The King has been forced to the edge: The black King is now at the edge of the board, he can't retreat more. Its time to deliver checkmate! } 5. Qgg8# { Deliver Checkmate: Checkmate at one of the 4 edges of the board. The King has nowhere to go and is in check. Its checkmate! } *
Common Mistakes
- Keeping the queens too far apart so they are not defending each other.
- Covering every escape square without giving check, which is stalemate.
- Checking randomly instead of moving the king toward the side of the board.
